Students in Veneshe Master Venetian Plastering's FirmoluxTM Plaster training program returned from Tuscany with more than just fond memories of beautiful scenery, great wine and delicious, freshly prepared meals and Italian hospitality. The class of 5 students also returned with the sense of accomplishment that comes from mastering a new art form via real world experience, by perfecting their art "on the wall." The setting was the beautifully restored, 12th century B&B farmhouse Fagiolare, located in the Chianti region midway between Florence and Siena.
The class, taught by Lori Blomstrom of Veneshe, included 6 half day intensive training sessions using Firmolux Bericalce plaster, followed by a gourmet lunch and afternoon/evening sightseeing in Siena, Florence, and nearby towns of Greve, Panzano and Castellina. The balance of teaching and practical application, the camaraderie and team work involved in working on a plaster restoration project, and the artistic experience of working with organic Italian materials, made for a memorable and authentic Tuscany experience that will long be remembered. Cooking Teacher and B&B owner Giulietta Giovannoni was thrilled with the process and the results, as the tired plaster walls of her personal quarters were transformed with a richly toned, multi-layer Marmorino Piatto finish which complemented the chestnut beamed ceiling and terra cotta floor and ceiling tiles. The Italian Plaster finish, skip troweled, lightly burnished and waxed, enlivened the room with its movement and color. Northampton artist Holly Fields-Scott, of Bella Pintura, hand-painted a crowning touch of olive branches over the windows and door, adding just a touch more decorative embellishment to the finished effect.
The training in Italy was the first of many planned by Blomstrom and her partner, Donnamarie Mazzola, of Veneshe Plastering. The couple plans a second 2010 plaster training and villa restoration project in October, near the hilltop village of Mondaino near the Adriatic coast. Classes in Italy lined up for 2011 include another visit to Tuscany, this time to the Val d'Orcia near Siena, as part of the program, Tuscany: A Journey of The Senses.
